- Background
Training & Clinical Formation
Dr James Brown studied Physiology and Medicine at St Bartholomew’s and The Royal London School of Medicine, qualifying in medicine in 2000. His interest in sleep medicine began early in his career while working within a specialist sleep and ventilation unit at the London Chest Hospital, under the leadership of a Professor of Sleep and Ventilation Medicine.
Working with patients affected by complex sleep disorders, respiratory failure, cystic fibrosis, and neuromuscular conditions provided a formative experience that cemented a lifelong passion for the field. He subsequently completed specialist training in respiratory and sleep medicine at leading London teaching hospitals, obtaining his Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Respiratory Medicine in 2015.
He has also undertaken additional specialist training in insomnia management through programmes delivered by the Universities of Oxford and Edinburgh, and holds a Diploma in Lifestyle Medicine.

As Co-Founder and Clinical Lead of Grace Sleep, Dr Brown is helping develop a new model of healthcare that combines sleep medicine, metabolic health, and lifestyle medicine to provide premium, personalised, and convenient care through both virtual and in-person services.
Over the past eight years, he has worked with high-performing individuals — including C-suite executives, entrepreneurs, and elite athletes across Europe and North America — helping optimise sleep, recovery, resilience, and daytime performance through the application of physiology, circadian biology, and personalised medicine.
Following a career spanning several London teaching hospitals — including a role helping establish the NHS Nightingale Hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic — Dr Brown stepped away from full-time NHS practice in 2022 to focus on clinical innovation and entrepreneurship.

Sleep problems rarely exist in isolation. Rather than focusing solely on symptoms, he undertakes a comprehensive assessment that considers genetics, physiology, psychology, lifestyle, occupational demands, stress, and circadian biology.
- Research & Innovation
Active in Research, Publication & Innovation
Dr Brown has authored more than 20 publications, abstracts, and book chapters throughout his career. He established and directed the UK’s first endobronchial ultrasound training course incorporating live procedural demonstrations, and has taught and mentored numerous junior doctors and healthcare professionals across national and international settings.
His research has included pioneering work using synchrotron light techniques to investigate human tissue, resulting in novel scientific findings and the formation of a biotechnology company. His international work has included contributing to projects in Africa — developing diagnostic infrastructure for tuberculosis and HIV through a Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation-funded programme in Zambia — and founding a lung cancer charity.
He remains deeply interested in the potential of digital health, wearable technologies, artificial intelligence, and data-driven medicine to transform healthcare delivery and create more personalised, preventative models of care.
- A Personal Perspective
A Former Ultra-Endurance Athlete Who Understands the Body
Away from the clinic, Dr Brown is a committed artist — maintaining an active practice in sculpture and ceramics — and has a lifelong passion for the natural world, regularly travelling with his family to experience some of the world’s most remarkable landscapes and ecosystems.
As a former ultra-endurance athlete, he has completed multiple marathons, ultra-endurance triathlons, long-distance open-water swims, and a crossing of the English Channel. These experiences continue to inform his understanding of resilience, recovery, human potential, and the critical role of sleep in sustained performance.
That lived experience shapes everything about how he works with patients: with a genuine understanding of the demands that modern life places on the body, and a deep commitment to finding solutions that work in the real world — not just the clinic.
